First of all Mike, if you don't have an authorized shop perform the first service, you can void your warranty. I believe they do a few other things like re-torque head bolts. After that I totally believe in doing self-tune ups, especially with the Savage because it's so easy. Also, I believe in synthetic oils and I think they're are worth the extra cost. I believe synths withstand heat better (important to an air cooled engine) and I believe they take longer to break down over time. It's an on-going battle on most motorcycle web pages but with 60K on my bike, synthetic has done me well. By the way, congratulations on your new purchase. Take care of it and you should have many trouble free miles. There are some quirks with this bike that this forum covers pretty well. You've got about two years of information here and a lot of good helpful tips. As far as valve clearance goes, a clymer has step by step instructions or email me and I'll see what I can do about sending them to you. Welcome
